Gymnast Maroney alleges molestatio­n

Two-time Olympic medalist McKayla Maroney said she was molested for years by a former USA Gymnastics team doctor, abuse she said started in her early teens and continued for the rest of her competitiv­e career.

Maroney posted a statement on Twitter that described the allegation­s of abuse against Dr. Larry Nassar, who spent three decades working with athletes at USA Gymnastics and is in jail in Michigan awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to possession of child pornograph­y.

Nassar also is awaiting trial on separate criminal sexual conduct charges and has been sued by more than 125 women alleging abuse.

Maroney said she decided to come forward as part of the “#MeToo” movement on social media that arose in the wake of allegation­s of sexual misconduct against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.

Maroney did not reply to an interview request from the AssociMilw­aukee ated Press.

Attorneys for Nassar had no comment.

DeShone Kizer was reinstated as starting quarterbac­k of the Cleveland Browns by coach Hue Jackson, who benched the rookie for one game after a rash of turnovers. The Browns (0-6) face the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Reliever Glen Perkins, 34, is not having a $6.5-million option on his contract for 2018 picked up by the Minnesota Twins, who are paying the left-hander a $700,000 buyout. A three-time All-Star, Perkins has 120 saves and a 3.88 earned-run average in 12 seasons.

Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa is leaving the Arizona Diamondbac­ks after serving as the organizati­on’s chief baseball officer from 2015 to 2016 and chief baseball analyst in 2017. La Russa said in a statement that the job was “more demanding than I realized.”

Louisville trustees fired athletic director Tom Jurich in the wake of the university’s involvemen­t in a federal investigat­ion of corruption in college basketball. Jurich, 61, held the post for 20 years.

Nelly Perry, the top returning scorer on the Clemson women’s basketball team, will sit out the season because of shoulder surgery. Perry, a senior guard who averaged 12.7 points last season, plans to be a redshirt.

Former NHL agent Stacey McAlpine was charged with fraud in a case involving former Ottawa Senators players Dany Heatley and Chris Phillips. Police in Winnipeg, Canada, said that McAlpine bilked Heatley and Phillips out of $12 million between January 2004 and June 2011.
