Fultz will sit out three games

Philadelph­ia 76ers rookie Markelle Fultz will sit out three games because of soreness in his right shoulder. The former Washington guard, the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NBA draft, has had problems with his shoulder that have greatly affected his freethrow form. Fultz sat out Wednesday’s game against the Houston Rockets and will also be sidelined for road games Saturday at Dallas and Monday at Houston . ... Tony Parker is taking another step toward returning to the San Antonio Spurs lineup, practicing with the Spurs’ G League affiliate. The point guard hasn’t played since suffering a ruptured tendon in his left quadriceps during last season’s Western Conference semifinals.

Tennessee running back John Kelly and linebacker Will Ignont have been suspended from the Volunteers’ Saturday game against Kentucky after they were cited on misdemeano­r drug-related charges this week. Knoxville police said they stopped a car that had a headlight out Tuesday at about 10:46 p.m. Police said they searched the vehicle with Kelly’s consent after smelling marijuana, and that 4.6 grams of marijuana and a glass pipe were found in the console.

Darrell Wallace Jr. will become the first black full-time driver at NASCAR’s top level since 1971 when he takes over Richard Petty’s iconic ride next season. The 24-year-old Wallace, more commonly referred to by his nickname of “Bubba,” became the first black driver to race at NASCAR’s top level since 2006 when he replaced an injured Aric Almirola this year . ... Chip Ganassi Racing signed Ed Jones to drive its second car in the IndyCar Series alongside Scott Dixon. Jones will drive the No. 10 NTT Data Honda. Jones was rookie of the year in IndyCar for Dale Coyne Racing last season. He also won the 2016 Indy Lights championsh­ip.

Defending champion Arrogate heads a full field of 14 horses for the Nov. 4 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar, with the world’s all-time leading money earner facing off against a horse that has beaten him twice in a row in the $6 million race that includes five runners trained by Bob Baffert. Pacific Classic winner Collected, who handed Arrogate his last two losses, Whitney and Suburban winner Gun Runner, Ireland-bred Mubtaahij and Travers winner West Coast are among the 14 horses expected to run in the 11⁄4-mile Classic.

Two-time champion Juan Martin del Potro advanced to the second round of the Swiss Indoors with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 win over Joao Sousa at Basel, Switzerlan­d. Del Potro won titles at Basel in 2012 and ’13, twice defeating Roger Federer in the final.
