‘ Only’ five killed

Re “Rampage ‘ could have been so much worse,’ ” Nov. 15

The idea that we should be grateful that the gunman, after killing his wife and hiding her body, killed “only” four more innocents is so terribly sad and noteworthy. This new normal of regular violence does not scare us enough, so we just accept it as part of being an American.

We stand up for many things in this country with great passion, as we should. But as long as we allow the Republican Party to repeat its tired mantra of “this isn’t the time to talk about gun control,” nothing will change.

Our children deserve to live in a safe world. The headline should have said, “More innocent victims died,” and noted that it happened because lawmakers appear not to care about the problem.

Every single victim of these maniacs matters. We are their voices now, and we must speak very loudly until we are heard and gun laws are changed. Frances Terrell Lippman Sherman Oaks

Thank God it was a human and not a gun that killed and injured more people in Northern California on Tuesday. The person ( not the gun) also apparently tried to get into a school for more mayhem.

Now is definitely not the time to discuss gun regulation, as we are too busy organizing our prayer memorials. Thanks to our president and his fellow Republicans for allowing us to have the weapons to shoot back at these disturbed individuals. David Haberman Woodland Hills

No doubt the the gun lobby will cling to its position that the 2nd Amendment gives Americans the right to own military- style assault weapons. It does not matter that the 1st Amendment guarantees the “right of people peaceably to assemble.”

What good is the right of assembly if the exercise of it is becoming increasingly threatened in what we once thought were safe places — homes, schools, concerts and even places of worship?

Congress must stop outsourcing its legislative power on guns to the National Rifle Assn. The blood shed by thousands of victims demands for such irresponsibility to stop. Peter O’Reilly Redondo Beach
