Slalom specialist Shiffrin prevails in downhill event

U.S. slalom star Mikaela Shiffrin raced to her first World Cup downhill victory, finishing in 1 minute 27.55 seconds to beat Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany by 0.13 seconds at Lake Louise, Canada.

The defending World Cup overall champion extended her overall lead over Rebensburg to 149 points.

American Lindsey Vonn was 12th a day after crashing in the downhill opener.

Receiver Alshon Jeffery was signed by the Philadelph­ia Eagles to a four-year contract extension that runs through 2021.

The deal is reportedly worth $52 million, with $27 million guaranteed. The 27-year-old Jeffery signed a one-year deal with the Eagles in free agency in March after playing for the Chicago Bears his first five seasons.

Jeffery is tied for fifth in the NFL with seven touchdown catches. He has 43 receptions and 619 yards receiving.

Jeffery has 347 receptions for 5,168 yards and 33 touchdowns in 74 games.

South Carolina State senior guard Tyvoris Solomon collapsed on the court and was taken to a hospital during the first half of the Bulldogs’ 103-71 loss at North Carolina State.

Coach Murray Gar vin accompanie­d Solomon to the hospital and assistant Rio Pitt said Solomon was “up and aware.”

Emergency medical personnel administer­ed chest compressio­ns before Solomon was removed on a stretcher. He collapsed near the bench at the 13:08 mark. The game resumed after a 40-minute delay.

Perry Wallace, the first black varsity basketball player in the Southeaste­rn Conference, died Friday in Rockville, Md., after a battle with cancer. He was 69.

He made history when he played for Vanderbilt in a game against Southern Methodist on Dec. 2, 1967. Two days later, he played in his first SEC varsity game against Auburn.

Wallace went on to become a law professor. He also served in the U.S. Justice Department and worked for the National Urban League.

Real Madrid blew a chance to move closer to leader Barcelona in the Spanish league standings after being held to a 1-1 tie by Athletic Bilbao.

Barcelona tied 2-2 with Celta Vigo and lost defender Samuel Umtiti for about two months because of a right hamstring injury.

Real Madrid is eight points behind Barcelona.
