White: Rousey done; McGregor may be
UFC president Dana White said former champion Ronda Rousey “won’t fight again” and current lightweight champ Conor McGregor “might never fight again.”
White this week announced Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov will fight for the interim lightweight title in April at UFC 223 in New York. McGregor hasn’t fought in the UFC since November 2016, and White said he soon could be stripped of it.
“We can’t tie up the title two years, no matter how much I love the kid,” White told the Associated Press. “We’ll let Tony Ferguson and Khabib fight for the title and then Conor obviously will be the first one to come back and get a crack.”
But White acknowledged McGregor may retire after making an estimated $100 million boxing Floyd Mayweather Jr. last year. He also sees other things in the future of Rousey, who lost her last two fights decisively and has been meeting with WWE officials about a possible pro wrestling career.
White also announced that the UFC 223 co-main event will be
Rose Namajunas’ first defense of her strawweight belt against former champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
