Oklahoma State sinks Oklahoma in OT

Trae Young scored 48 points but No. 4 Oklahoma fell to host Oklahoma State 83-81 in overtime Saturday.

Young, a freshman guard who leads the nation in scoring, had 34 points after halftime. He matched the fifthhighe­st scoring effort in Sooners history.

Jeffrey Carroll had 23 points and 13 rebounds, and Kendall Smith had 20 points for the Cowboys (13-6, 3-4 Big 12 Conference). Smith’s three-point basket with eight seconds left in regulation tied it 73-73.

The Sooners (14-4, 4-3) had defeated the Cowboys 109-89 in Norman on Jan. 3.

Oklahoma State led by two points late in overtime when Carroll missed a free throw that gave the Sooners a chance with 7.4 seconds remaining.

Young struggled to get the ball up the court and was forced into a poor shot.

“I knew it wasn’t going to go in,” he said. “No, I didn’t feel comfortabl­e.”

The Cowboys took a 25-6 lead in the first 10 minutes but the Sooners slowed the surge with an 8-0 run.

“It’s a game of runs,” Smith said. “They were playing well, but we fought and did what we were capable of.”

at Houston 73, No. 7 Wichita State 59: Rob Gray scored 24 points and the Cougars (15-4, 5-2 American Athletic Conference) beat a top-10 team for the first time since defeating No. 3 Memphis 69-67 in January 1996. The Shockers (15-4, 5-2) shot a season-low 33% and committed 18 turnovers.

at Iowa State 70, No. 8 Texas Tech 52: Freshman Cameron Lard scored 18 points and the Cyclones (11-7, 2-5 Big 12) cruised in their first victory over a ranked team this season. Desi Rodriguez scored 19 points for the Pirates (15-5, 4-3), who lost for the first time in 12 home games. No. 13 Gonzaga 75, at Santa Clara 60: Josh Perkins scored 17 points for the Bulldogs (17-4, 7-1 West Coast Conference), who beat the Broncos (7-13, 4-4) for the 17th consecutiv­e time.

at No. 17 Auburn 79, Georgia 65: Bryce Brown had 28 points to help the Tigers (17-2, 5-1 Southeaste­rn Conference) rally from a 16point deficit late in the first half. Auburn went on an 18-2 run to start the second half. Yante Maten had 17 points for the Bulldogs (12-6, 3-4). Florida 66, at No. 18 Kentucky 64: Jalen Hudson came off the bench to score 17 points for the first-place Gators (14-5, 6-1 SEC), who rallied after squanderin­g a 45-37 second-half lead, which became a 56-53 deficit. The Gators stole the inbounds pass with 2.5 seconds left to win for the eighth time in nine tries and take a two-game conference lead over the Wildcats (14-5, 4-3).

No. 22 Ohio State 67, Minnesota 49: Keita BatesDiop had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Buckeyes (17-4, 8-0 Big Ten Conference) at New York’s Madison Square Garden. It was the seventh victory in a row for Ohio State and Chris Holtmann became the third Big Ten coach to win his first eight conference games. The Golden Gophers (14-8, 3-6) led by 10 points in the first half before Ohio State went on a 24-2 run.

at Kansas State 73, No. 24 Texas Christian 68: Dean Wade scored 20 points for the Wildcats (14-5, 4-3 Big 12) and sophomore Makol Mawien had a career-high 18 points. He had scored only 13 points in conference play this season. Coach Jamie Dixon of the Horned Frogs (14-5, 2-5) was called for two technical fouls and was ejected.

at No. 20 Clemson 67, Notre Dame 58: Gabe DeVoe had 17 points, including a key three-point basket with 3:18 to go, and the Tigers (16-3, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat the Fighting Irish (13-7, 3-4) for the first time in six meetings all time. Notre Dame lost its fourth consecutiv­e game.
