Hammer, Paltrow tackle theater

“Straight White Men”: Armie Hammer, star of “Call Me By Your Name,” will make his Broadway debut alongside Tom Skerritt in this Second Stage Theater production of Young Jean Lee’s critically acclaimed exploratio­n of identity and entitlemen­t, which begins previews at Hayes Theatre on June 29. “The Portuguese Kid”: Missed seeing Tony Award winner and former “Seinfeld” star Jason Alexander in this Manhattan Theater Club production of John Patrick Shanley’s romantic comedy? The play was captured Dec. 11 for the BroadwayHD streaming service, with a release date forthcomin­g at broadway hd.com. “Head Over Heels”: Gwyneth Paltrow is among the producers bringing a new musical to Broadway featuring music by the female rock band the GoGos. The show is directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (“Spring Awakening,” “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”), with an original book by Tony winner Jeff Whitty (“Avenue Q”). “Head Over Heels” opens at the Curran in San Francisco on April 10. “Angels in America”: An upcoming Berkeley Repertory Theatre production of Tony Kushner’s two-part, Pulitzer Prize-winning play stars Randy Harrison from Showtime’s “Queer as Folk,” alongside Caldwell Tidicue, who won Season 8 of the reality show “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and is known as Bob the Drag Queen. Tony Award winner Stephen Spinella returns to the show. He made his Broadway debut in the original 1993 production­s. Previews begin April 17. “Nice Fish”: This play cowritten by Mark Rylance, who won the supporting actor Oscar in 2015 for his work in “Bridge of Spies,” will open at Shakespear­e Center of Los Angeles on Feb. 16. The Interact Theatre Company production, which examines the inner lives of two old friends icefishing on a Minnesota lake, is directed by Rob Brownstein and Anita Khanzadian and marks the fifth time the play has been profession­ally performed.
