U.S. advances to Davis Cup quarterfinals
The United States advanced to the Davis Cup quarterfinals after beating host Serbia for the first time thanks to a four-set doubles victory.
Ryan Harrison and Steve Johnson defeated Nikola Milojevic and Miljan Zekic 6-7 (3), 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 to cap the 3-0 victory.
The Americans will have a home quarterfinal against Belgium or Hungary.
Belgium, which was up 2-0 against Hungary after Friday, failed to clinch the tie in Liege when Ruben Bemelmans and Joris de Loore lost to Attila Balazs and Marton Fucsovics 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (2), 4-6, 7-5 in a match lasting more than four hours.
Switzerland, without Roger Federer, lost 3-0 to host Kazakhstan after a nearly 31⁄2-hour doubles match.
Defending champion France, playing at home in Albertville,
moved 2-1 ahead of the Netherlands after two-time major winners Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut came through against Robin Haase and JeanJulien Rojer 7-6 (6), 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2).
Australian Open singles finalist Marin Cilic teamed with Ivan Dodig for a five-set victory over Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil of Canada, which hasn’t won an away tie since 2011.
Spain led visiting Britain 2-1 in Marbella after Pablo Carreno Busta and Feliciano Lopez defeated Dominic Inglot and Jamie Murray 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (4). The Spaniards forced 35 errors to win the match in just under 21⁄2 hours.
Germany led host Australia 2-1 in Brisbane thanks to Tim Puetz and Jan-Lennard Struff prevailing against Matthew Ebden and John Peers 6-4, 6-7 (1), 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-4. The visitor was also up in Morioka, where Italy led Japan after Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini outlasted Ben Mclachlan and Yasutaka Uchiyama 7-5, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3), 7-5.
