Plenty of museums on display
There are at least 55,000 museums in the world, according to the International Council of Museums, and several new ones are set to open this year. Here’s a sampling.
Scotland London’s V&A Museum, once called the Victoria and Albert, traces its roots to 1851. This year V&A Dundee on the east coast of Scotland will open Sept. 15 as the first satellite museum to bear the name. The focus will be on Scottish design — architecture, ceramics, jewelry and textiles. The opening show is “Ocean Liners: Speed and Style.” Info: vandadundee.org

Egypt The partly opened Grand Egyptian Museum near Giza welcomed one of its first bigwigs into the building: an ancient statue of famed pharaoh Ramses II, weighing about 83 tons. The building, still under construction, features a facade of pyramids. When done, it will be the permanent home to King Tut and other royal mummies plus about 100,000 of the country’s ancient treasures. No opening date has been set. Info: lat.ms/grandegyptian museum
