G Leaguer dies

Zeke Upshaw, a player for the Detroit Pistons’ G League affiliate who collapsed on the court Saturday in a game, has died. No cause was announced.

Upshaw, 26, was in his second season with the Grand Rapids Drive. The 6-foot-6 swingman from Chicago played three seasons at Illinois State and finished at Hofstra.

Philadelph­ia Eagles All-Pro defensive end Michael Bennett surrendere­d to authoritie­s in Houston on a charge that he injured an elderly, paraplegic stadium worker as he tried to get on the field to celebrate after the 2017 Super Bowl . ... The New York Jets will work out Wyoming quarterbac­k Josh Allen and don’t plan to have a private session with USC’s Sam Darnold. General manager Mike Maccagnan said the team has had “quite a bit of exposure” to Darnold . ... A former New Orleans Saints cheerleade­r filed a discrimina­tion complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunit­y Commission, claiming the team holds cheerleade­rs to strict rules that don’t apply to players . ... Former New York Giants linebacker and Montana State star Corey Widmer declined his nomination to the Montana Football Hall of Fame, saying the sport “destroyed my life.” He said after numerous concussion­s he fears he suffers from chronic traumatic encephalop­athy.

Left-hander Derek Holland will open the season as the San Francisco Giants’ No. 3 starter this weekend at Dodger Stadium . ... Bartolo Colon signed another minor league contract with the Texas Rangers, who anticipate the 44year-old starting their fifth game but are making no promises beyond that . ... Former manager Dusty Baker is rejoining the Giants as a special adviser . ... New York Yankees first baseman Greg Bird needs right ankle surgery and could be out for nearly two months . ... Former All-Star slugger Albert Belle was arrested on suspicion of indecent exposure and extreme driving under the influence in Arizona . ... The Chicago White Sox rehired a former groundskee­per who spent 23 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Nevest Coleman, convicted in a 1994 rape and murder, was released after DNA tests linked the crime to a serial rapist.

Sloane Stephens beat No. 3-ranked Garbine Muguruza 6-3, 6-4 to reach the Miami Open quarterfin­als. Threetime champ Venus Williams came from behind for the second day in a row and beat defending champion Johanna Konta 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. Victoria Azarenka, another three-time champ, swept 2012 champ Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 6-2.

Santa Margarita High, which plays in the the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League, won the USA Hockey national championsh­ip with a 3-2 overtime win over Regis Jesuit of Aurora, Colo., in Plymouth, Minn. The Eagles won on a goal by Leevi Selanne, the son of former Ducks star Teemu Selanne.

American Chez Reavie was one of the last additions to the Masters, which will have its smallest field in 21 years with no more than 87 players . ... Tiger Woods will play in his Washington-area tournament benefiting his foundation.
