L.A. Kitchen is a nonprofit started about five years ago by Robert Egger, the 2004 James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of the Year. The Kitchen includes a culinary job training program for former inmates and young adults who age out of foster care; a reclamation center for wasted food; and a feeding facility for lowincome senior citizens. The maxim? Neither food nor people should ever to go waste. Food Forward, founded by Rick Nahmias in 2009, fights hunger and food waste by gathering food from backyards, farmers' markets and produce terminals and distributing it to hunger relief agencies across eight counties in Southern California. In the last eight years, the nonprofit has rescued more than 35 million pounds (more than 140 million servings) of fresh local produce. The Midnight Mission, founded in 1914, is dedicated to assisting the homeless by offering paths to selfsufficiency, including access to the necessities of life: food, shelter, clothing and medical care. Centered in the skid row area of downtown Los Angeles, the mission offers emergency services as well as 12-step recovery, family living, job training, education and workforce development programs.
