ORGANIC HARVEST GARDENS Restaurati­on restaurant in Long Beach and Organic Harvest Gardens will host an urban gardening class for kids and their parents to learn how to maximize space, build a planter and grow produce. Participan­ts will get to build and take home their own miniature planter with freshly planted seeds for seasonal vegetables and enjoy a lunch prepared by chef Philip Pretty on the farm. Signature flavors include poblano gelato, made from steeping roasted poblano chiles in sweet milk; black sesame gelato, reminiscen­t of the black sesame sweet buns from Chinese bakeries in the San Gabriel Valley; and ube gelato, made from a homemade purple yam paste jam, an ode to L.A.'s Filipino culture. KCRW'S "GOOD FOOD" PIE CONTEST

ROYCE QUAD, UCLA Home cooks and profession­als will compete and be rated by the KCRW "Good Food" pie contest judges — a collection of chefs and food writers.
