ORGANIC HARVEST GARDENS Restauration restaurant in Long Beach and Organic Harvest Gardens will host an urban gardening class for kids and their parents to learn how to maximize space, build a planter and grow produce. Participants will get to build and take home their own miniature planter with freshly planted seeds for seasonal vegetables and enjoy a lunch prepared by chef Philip Pretty on the farm. GELATERIA ULI During the month of May, Gelateria Uli will offer a tasting "flight" of eight L.A.-inspired flavors at both the downtown and West 3rd Street locations. Signature flavors include poblano gelato, made from steeping roasted poblano chiles in sweet milk; black sesame gelato, reminiscent of the black sesame sweet buns from Chinese bakeries in the San Gabriel Valley; and ube gelato, made from a homemade purple yam paste jam, an ode to L.A.'s Filipino culture. NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY Bug Fair is a two-day festival celebrating our winged, multi-legged, squirmy and sometimes bug-eyed friends. See everything from exotic insect collections to pet tarantulas, from millipedes to centipedes, from bug-related products such as honey and silk to bug-inspired artwork and jewelry. Visit the main stage to watch “bug chefs” whip up protein-filled snacks, and explore the Nature Gardens for the chance to go on bug hunts, get crafty, experience up-close encounters with crawly creatures, and more! KCRW'S "GOOD FOOD" PIE CONTEST
ROYCE QUAD, UCLA Home cooks and professionals will compete and be rated by the KCRW "Good Food" pie contest judges — a collection of chefs and food writers. Enter a pie, cheer on the competitors, or stop by and enjoy a slice or two. "Good Food" host Evan Kleiman will preside over the festivities, which will include music from KCRW on-air personality Anne Litt, an artisan food marketplace, pie tasting, kids’ activities and baking demos.
