Hall of Famer Greer dies

Hal Greer, a Hall of Fame guard and the Philadelph­ia 76ers’ career leading scorer, died Saturday after a brief illness. He was 81.

Greer spent 15 seasons with the Syracuse Nationals and 76ers and made 10 straight AllStar games. He finished with a record 21,586 points and is also the 76ers’ career leader in field goals, field goals attempted, games and minutes played.

Five-time Pro Bowl linebacker James Harrison, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ career sacks leader, is retiring for the second time. Jacksonvil­le Jaguars linebacker Paul Posluszny formally retired after 11 seasons . ... Running back C.J. Anderson was released by the Denver Broncos despite rushing for a career-best 1,007 yards last season . ... The Minnesota Vikings signed linebacker Eric Kendricks to a multiyear extension . ... Other signings: Receivers Josh Gordon (Cleveland Browns) and Jeremy Kerley (Buffalo Bills) and defensive end David Irving (Dallas Cowboys) agreed to one-year contracts . ... The NFL is improving player safety by implementi­ng new standards for helmets and banned, or is phasing out, about a third of the models it tested . ... Cornerback Daryl Worley, released by the Philadelph­ia Eagles after a Sunday arrest, is charged with driving under the influence, firearm offenses and resisting arrest.

Figure skater Patrick Chan, a 10-time Canadian champion who helped win team gold at February’s Winter Olympics, is retiring.
