Royal Caribbean’s dress-code flip

- — Rosemary McClure

Are shorts and tank tops OK in Royal Caribbean International dining rooms? Maybe. Maybe not. After changing its website to indicate the very casual look would be allowed, Royal Caribbean altered the dress code to ban shorts and tank tops in the main dining room.

Holland America, Princess, Cunard and a host of other lines also consider them inappropriate dining room attire. Here’s what will fly:

For formal nights, “suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns.”

For smart casual nights, “collared shirts, dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits.”

For casual nights, “jeans, polos, sundresses and blouses” but guests are asked to “keep swimwear to the Pool Deck.” Shorts and tanks are OK for breakfast and lunch, but not in the main dining room at dinner.
