President cancels White House visit for Super Bowl winners, citing disagreement over anthem.

President Trump called off a visit by the Philadelphia Eagles to the White House on Monday, saying some members of the Super Bowl champions “disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart.”

The team wanted to send a smaller delegation, Trump said in a statement, but fans who planned to attend “deserve better.” He said he’ll be hosting “a different type of ceremony” with the U.S. Marine Band and U.S. Army Chorus.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney was among the politicians who responded in support of the team. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., invited the Eagles to come to Capitol Hill.

None of the Eagles took a knee during the anthem in 2017, but several players have been outspoken about the subject and said they wouldn’t visit the White House.

The NFL recently announced a policy requiring players to stand for the anthem if they’re on the field. Trump had suggested players who kneel be fired.
