Pac-12 vote: six wins to reach bowl game

The Pac-12 will require its teams to win at least six regular-season games to play in a bowl game, eliminatin­g the opportunit­y for a 5-7 squad to earn a postseason spot.

Pac-12 presidents passed the rule. Three 5-7 teams played in bowls in 2015, two in 2016. None were needed last season when the number of bowl slots dropped to 78.

Former USC quarterbac­k Carson Palmer, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2002, is joined on the new College Football Hall of Fame ballot by former Trojans defensive backs Dennis Thurman and Troy Polamalu. Former UCLA quarterbac­k Cade McNown and former Bruins linebacker Ken Norton Jr. are also among the 76 players and six coaches on the ballot . ... UCLA tight end Jimmy Jaggers, who didn’t play last year as a freshman, announced his medical retirement after a third concussion.

Former world No. 1 Adam Scott qualified for the U.S. Open with one stroke to spare in his first 36hole sectional qualifier.

Newly released police video of the stun gun arrest of Milwaukee Bucks guard Sterling Brown shows one officer stepping on Brown’s ankle while he was handcuffed on the ground and others discussing the potential backlash of taking down a black profession­al basketball player. Milwaukee police officers swarmed Brown in January when he didn’t immediatel­y take his hands out of his pockets as ordered. Brown had been standing and talking with officers as he waited for a citation for illegally parking in a disabled spot. Brown wasn’t charged and three officers were discipline­d.

Former USC guard De’Anthony Mason was among six players who worked out for the Clippers in advance of the June 21 NBA draft. The others: Louisiana State guard Brandon Sampson; Texas Tech guard Zharie Smith; Oregon swingman Troy Brown; Seton Hall center Angel Delgado; and Oregon State center Drew Eubanks.

Auburn gave men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl a five-year contract extension after the program’s best season in years . ... Former coach and Hall of Famer C.M. Newton died at 88. Newton was a member of Kentucky’s 1951 NCAA championsh­ip squad during a career spanning more than 50 years as a player, coach and administra­tor. He was 509-375 as a coach at Transylvan­ia College, Alabama and Vanderbilt.

Florida State’s Anna Shelnutt hit a solo homer and Meghan King pitched a five-hitter to help Florida State defeat Washington 1-0 in Game 1 of the Women’s College World Series championsh­ip series.

Doctors concluded that Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius suffered a concussion during last month’s Champions League final before allowing two goals in the team’s 3-1 loss to Real Madrid . ... The Netherland­s scored late to hold 10-man Italy to a 1-1 draw in a World Cup warmup.
