Federer goes for 99th title

Defending champion Roger Federer will play 21-year-old Borna Coric in the Gerry Weber Open final as he chases his 99th career singles title Sunday in Germany.

Federer reached his 12th final in Halle by beating Denis Kudla 7-6 (1), 7-5. Federer is going for a record-extending 10th title. It will be his second final in as many weeks, after winning his 18th grass-court title in Stuttgart. The top-ranked Federer has won his last 20 matches on grass.

Novak Djokovic advanced to his first ATP tour final in almost a year by beating Jeremy Chardy at Queen’s Club in London. Djokovic will face Marin Cilic in Sunday’s final after the top-seeded Croat beat Nick Kyrgios . ... Former top-ranked Amelie Mauresmo will become the first woman to captain France’s Davis Cup men’s team when she replaces Yannick Noah next season . ... Defending champion Petra Kvitova raced into the Birmingham (England) Classic final with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mihaela Buzarnescu. She plays Magdalena Rybarikova in Sunday’s final . ... Defending world champion Emma Coburn claimed her seventh national title in women’s steeplecha­se, in 9:17.70, while Olympic champion Matthew Centrowitz won the men’s 1,500 meters in 3:43.37 to claim his fifth title.
