College World Series opener postponed

The opening game of the College World Series, matching Oregon State and Arkansas, was postponed until Tuesday because of inclement weather in Omaha, Neb . ... Mississipp­i State has hired Indiana’s Chris Lemonis to be its next baseball coach.

Safety Ron Parker, who spent the last five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, signed a one-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons . ... Keith McCants, a former defensive end with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was arrested and charged with drug possession in Florida. Pinellas County Jail records show that McCants, 50, was arrested near St. Petersburg. He is charged with a felony count of possession of crack cocaine and driving with a revoked or suspended license.

The Indiana Pacers are parting ways with guard Lance Stephenson, a gritty veteran who brought energy off the bench in last season’s surprising run to the playoffs. The team will not pick up the team option next season, club executive Kevin Pritchard said.

The Kings did not extend a qualifying offer to restricted free agent Tobias Rieder, who will become an unrestrict­ed free agent July 1. The Kings made offers to Paul LaDue, Kurtis MacDermid and Alex Lintuniemi. They did not extend Jordan Subban and Justin Auger.

The Ducks made offers to Brandon Montour, Nick Ritchie, Ondrej Kase, Nicolas Kerdiles, Kevin Roy, Andy Welinski and Kalle Kossila. Monday was the deadline to submit offers to restricted free agents.

The first big free agent re-signing with his own team is just the beginning of what’s to come around the NHL. Defenseman John Carlson signed a $64-million, eight-year deal with the Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals. His agent and representa­tives for other pending unrestrict­ed free agents were able to start talking to any interested teams Sunday at the beginning of the negotiatin­g window that precedes the opening of the market July 1 . ... The San Jose Sharks declined to issue a qualifying offer to Dylan DeMelo, making the defenseman an unrestrict­ed free agent . ... The Detroit Red Wings agreed to terms with forwards Tyler Bertuzzi and Martin Frk.

Texas hired Oregon softball coach Mike White, who guided the Ducks to five Women’s College World Series in nine seasons.
