Froome falls 55 seconds back

Chris Froome’s Team Sky came up four seconds short of winning the team time trial in the third stage of the Tour de France, as Greg Van Avermaet of victorious BMC claimed the yellow jersey. Van Avermaet, a Belgian who excels at single-day classics, isn’t a threat for the overall title but he could keep the lead through the cobbleston­ed Stage 9 ending in Roubaix. Froome, the three-time defending champion, was left 55 seconds behind in the overall standings with another week of rolling stages before hitting the Alps.

The Carolina Panthers announced that the sale of the franchise to David Tepper has closed. The founder and president of global hedge fund Appaloosa Management, L.P. bought the team from founder Jerry Richardson for $2.2 billion — the most ever paid for an NFL franchise. Richardson put the team up for sale in December after reports of sexual and racial misconduct in the workplace, which the league later confirmed.

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Marquez White has been indicted on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in what he described as a road-rage incident in suburban Dallas. White, 23, said in a statement to his hometown newspaper, the Dothan Eagle in Alabama, that a motorist became angry with White as he drove home in October. White says he pulled a handgun when the motorist appeared to be reaching for his own.

Police in Pittsburgh said that former Detroit Lions tight end Brandon Pettigrew was arrested for punching an officer after refusing to pay a limo driver. Pettigrew, 33, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, theft of services and public drunkennes­s.
