Alabama is No. 1 at being No. 1 in the top 25 AP rankings

The Crimson Tide made their 106th overall appearance at the top of the AP rankings, which started in 1936, passing Ohio State for the most by any school. Alabama received a season-high 54 firstplace votes from the media panel in the top 25 released Sunday, strengthen­ing its hold on No. 1 over No. 2 Clemson. The Tigers, who started the season with 18 first-place votes, are down to six after hanging on for 28-26 victory at Texas A&M on Saturday.

No. 3 Georgia and No. 4 Ohio State held their spots and Oklahoma moved to No. 5, edging past No. 6 Wisconsin. The Badgers received a first-place vote. USC dropped five spots to No. 22.

Justin Rose has to wait to have a shot at getting to No. 1 in the world. And he still might not have to hit another shot at the BMW Championsh­ip in Newtown Square, Pa.

A steady rain washed out play Sunday at soggy Aronimink, and the PGA Tour will wait until Monday to decide whether it can try to complete 72 holes of the third FedEx Cup playoff event.

If the forecast makes it unlikely to finish, the tour could cut the tournament to 54 holes.

Caroline Hedwall of Sweden rallied from seven shots behind with a nine-under 62 for a two-shot victory over Stacy Lee Bregman of South Africa in the Ladies French Open . ... Former world No. 1 Jiyai Shin won for the second straight week on the Japan LPGA Tour, closing with a four-under 68 for a nineshot victory in the Japan LPGA Championsh­ip Konica Minolta Cup. It was her third victory this season.

Persistent rain washed out the Brickyard 400 in Indianapol­is and delayed the conclusion of NASCAR’s regular season. The final race before the playoffs was moved to Monday. It will run at 11 a.m. PDT, after the reschedule­d Xfinity Series race.

One person died and at least 37 were injured in a crush before an African Cup of Nations soccer qualifier in Madagascar involving Sadio Mane’s Senegal team. The Madagascar vs. Senegal qualifier went ahead and ended in a 2-2 draw.
