Falcons’ Freeman is sidelined

-

Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman is going on injured reserve because of a groin injury that will require surgery, coach Dan Quinn said.

One of the NFL’s highest-paid running backs, Freeman has been slowed by injuries the last two seasons. He will have to sit out at least eight games while on IR and won’t be eligible to return until the next-to-last game of the regular season.

Josh Allen, the Buffalo Bills’ rookie quarterback, was diagnosed with a sprained right elbow on his throwing arm and is not expected to play at Indianapolis this weekend, a person with direct knowledge told the Associated Press.

The person, who spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because the team has not revealed the nature of the injury, described Allen’s status as being week to week as opposed to being out indefinitely.

The San Francisco 49ers signed quarterback Tom Savage to a one-year deal to add depth behind C.J. Beathard and waived tight end Cole Wick . ... The Oakland Raiders are releasing linebacker Derrick Johnson and promoting linebacker Jason Cabinda from the practice squad, coach Jon Gruden said.

Junior All-American defensive end Nick Bosa is leaving Ohio State to focus on getting ready for the NFL draft, the school announced. Bosa suffered a core muscle injury Sept. 15 and had surgery.

Louisville sophomore tight end Kemari Averett was charged with putting a gun to his girlfriend’s head and threatening to kill her, allegedly because of a missing laptop.

Averett, 20, remained in Louisville Metro jail on $10,000 bond after pleading not guilty to first-degree wanton endangerment and fourth-degree assault, and faces an Oct. 26 hearing. He was suspended from the team.

Four-time All-Star forward Jimmy Butler, who has asked to be traded, will be on the court Wednesday night when Minnesota plays at San Antonio in the NBA opener for the teams.

Butler has participated in only four days of on-court workouts with the Timberwolves, starting with his raucous appearance a week ago. He did not accompany the team to its exhibition game Friday because of what was officially announced as rehabilitation for his right hand that was surgically repaired in July.

Josh Sargent, an 18-year-old who has yet to play a first-team professional match, scored early in the second half before a young United States team conceded an 86th-minute goal to Enrico Flores in a 1-1 exhibition tie against Peru in East Hartford, Conn.
