Salt Lake City got the green light to bid for the Winter Olympics, most likely for 2030, in an attempt to bring the Games back to the city that hosted in 2002 and provided the backdrop for the U.S. winter team’s ascendance into an internatio­nal powerhouse.

The U.S. Olympic Committee selected Utah’s capital over Denver and Reno.

Oakland Raiders receiver Martavis Bryant was suspended indefinite­ly for violating the NFL policy on substance abuse . ... The NFL has fined umpire Roy Ellison $9,300 and reinstated him from administra­tive leave after his Dec. 2 dispute in Miami with Buffalo Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes, a person familiar with the move told AP. ... The Jacksonvil­le Jaguars released safety Barry Church, who was benched last month but who started 27 consecutiv­e games over two seasons . ... Bill Fralic, an offensive lineman who starred for the Atlanta Falcons and was a three-time AllAmerica­n at Pittsburgh, died Thursday at his home in suburban Atlanta. He was 56.

Ariarne Titmus of Australia broke a second world record in three days, winning gold in the women’s 400-meter freestyle at the world short-course swimming championsh­ips at Hangzhou, China.

John Hall, a sportswrit­er whose columns and stories appeared for more than four decades in Southern California newspapers, died Monday night in San Clemente. He was 90.

Hall got his start in high school, writing for the Manual Arts Daily, but it was at The Times where he made his mark as the longtime Page 3 columnist writing the “Hall Truth,” a notes column that was widely read. Hall also wrote for the Hollywood Citizen News, L.A. Mirror, Orange County Register and the San Clemente Sun Post.

No funeral is planned. He is survived by wife Toni, son John K. Hall and daughter Marie Hall.
