Hubbell, Donohue win again

Madison Hubbell and Zach Donohue won their second straight ice dancing title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championsh­ips in Detroit, beating out Madison Chock and Evan Bates.

Ashley Cain and Timothy LeDuc won the pairs competitio­n, and world champion Nathan Chen had the top short program in the men’s event. Chen is poised to win his third straight title.

Jessica Pegula defeated fellow American Lauren Davis 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the women’s final at the Oracle Challenger Series. She will face Canadian Bianca Andreescu, who defeated Tatjana Maria 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (3). In the men’s final, top seeded Taylor Fritz, who defeated Enzo Couacaud 6-1, 6-4, will take on Canadian Brayden Schnur, who beat American Donald Young 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (6).

Keith Thurman (29-0) made a winning return from a 22-month layoff, beating Riverside’s Josesito Lopez via majority decision, 117-109, 115-111, 113-113, at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center to retain his World Boxing Assn. welterweig­ht title. The Chicago Bulls said rookie forward Chandler Hutchison will miss at least a few weeks because of a right foot injury.

Nebraska forward Isaac Copeland is out for the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee against Ohio State.

Members of the Stanford University track team are safe after their charter bus caught fire in Seattle. The team was traveling to an invitation­al track meet at Washington when some students noticed flames at the back of the bus.

The Internatio­nal Olympic Committee backed FIFA’s calls for a Bahraini soccer player to be allowed to return to Australia from Thailand, where he is in detention while being pursued for extraditio­n by Bahrain. But Asian soccer’s leadership declined to publicly back the campaign to secure the release of Hakeem al-Araibi, who has refugee status in Australia. Al-Araibi said he was tortured in Bahrain after his 2012 arrest and fled in 2014 to Australia.

Elana Meyers Taylor of the United States won a World Cup bobsled race in Switzerlan­d, ending Germany’s 24-race winning streak in World Cup and Olympic bobsled races dating to last season . ... In Germany, Austrian skier Nicole Schmidhofe­r denied Sofia Goggia a fairy-tale comeback by winning her first World Cup super-G. Schmidhofe­r finished 0.23 seconds ahead of Goggia, who was racing for the first time since October when she broke a bone in her right ankle while training . ... Olympic champion Mikael Kingsbury of Canada won a World Cup moguls race on his home course after a disappoint­ing performanc­e a week earlier. On the women’s side, Perrine Laffont of France was the winner, followed by Australia’s Jakara Anthony and Canada’s Justine Dufour-Lapointe . ... Natalie Geisenberg­er won the luge world championsh­ip for the fourth time, holding off fellow German Julia Taubitz and American Emily Sweeney on her home course.

Atlantic City’s Hard Rock casino began offering sports betting after getting permission from New Jersey gambling regulators to begin so-called “softplay” testing of equipment and systems.

Duke’s Daniel Jones threw a touchdown pass and ran for one to lead the North to a 34-24 victory over the South in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. Roger Penske’s cars were first and second eight hours through the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Juan Pablo Montoya was credited with the lead at the mark.
