Jimenez wins Chubb Classic

Miguel Angel Jimenez won the Chubb Classic for his seventh PGA Tour Champions title, beating Bernhard Langer and Olin Browne with a five-foot par putt on the first hole of a playoff in Naples, Fla. Jimenez closed with a five-under-par 66 to match Langer and Browne at 13-under 200.

“I’m working hard and I practice and go to the gym, apart from smoking and drinking,” Jimenez said. “This is what I love to do. I love to play golf. To me, competing is my life.”

Kevin Sutherland and Woody Austin each shot 69 to finish a shot out of the playoff.

Nelly Korda added to her family’s impressive sports pedigree Down Under with a win in the Women’s Australian Open. Korda had a third consecutiv­e birdie on No. 12 to help claim a two-stroke victory with a five-under 67, finishing with a 17under 271. Jin Young Ko finished second . ... highly anticipate­d return from a 2 ⁄2-year layoff proved to be short-lived, as Francis Ngannou knocked out the former twotime champion in 26 seconds. Ngannou (13-3) dropped Velasquez with an uppercut moments into the UFC Fight Night main event in Phoenix.

In perhaps his last race at the world championsh­ips, Austria’s Marcel Hirscher produced one of the best runs of his decorated career to set up a big lead in the slalom, then coasted to victory in Are, Sweden. It was his record-tying seventh career gold medal at the event.

The man suspected of shooting former Paraguay national soccer team standout Salvador Cabanas in the head in 2010 was sentenced to 20 years in prison in Mexico. But federal prosecutor­s said in a statement that a man described only as Jose Jorge “B” was sentenced for organized crime, not attempted murder. Multiple Mexican media outlets said the sentenced man was an alleged associate of the former Beltran Leyva cartel.
