Copa America 2020 hosts are selected

-

Argentina and Colombia were selected in principle to cohost the 2020 Copa America despite their capital cities, Buenos Aires and Bogota, being more than six hours apart by plane.

South American soccer’s governing body said that it chose to stage the quadrennial tournament on its continent despite announcing proposals from the United States and Australia.

Lionel Messi scored twice and host Barcelona beat Lyon 5-1 to reach the Champions League quarterfinals.

Liverpool advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 victory at Bayern Munich behind two goals by Sadio Mane.

Members of the FIFA council will be asked Friday to approve a pilot tournament for an expanded 24-team Club World Cup in June-July 2021 featuring eight European participants, but plans for a worldwide Nations League are on hold, the Associated Press learned.

An overhaul of the current seventeam annual event, normally in December, is being pursued by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to generate interest and greater revenue despite opposition from Europe, with the long-term vision of the bigger tournament being held every four years.

Defenseman Brian Lashoff signed a two-year extension with the Detroit Red Wings. Lashoff has two goals and 11 assists in 123 games with the Red Wings.

Aaron Hernandez’s murder conviction was reinstated in a sweeping ruling from Massachusetts’ highest court that does away with the legal principle that made the former NFL receiver not guilty in the eyes of the law after he killed himself in prison.

The Supreme Judicial Court unanimously found that the legal rule that erased Hernandez’s conviction is “outdated and no longer consonant with the circumstances of contemporary life.” It ordered that Hernandez’s conviction be restored and that the practice be abolished for future cases. The ruling does not affect past cases.

Hernandez was convicted in 2015 of killing semipro football player Odin Lloyd. Two years later, the 27-year-old killed himself in his prison cell days after being acquitted of most charges in a separate double-murder case.
