NCAA adjusts its targeting rule

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel adjusted the targeting rule in college football. Video review officials are now allowed to overturn a targeting call if any element of the penalty cannot be confirmed. The overtime format also was changed. Once a game reaches a fifth overtime, teams will run alternatin­g twopoint plays instead of starting another drive at the opponent’s 25-yard line.

Former Kansas guard Charlie Moore is transferri­ng to DePaul. Coach Dave Leitao announced the move, making DePaul Moore’s third school. He began his career at California and is transferri­ng again after one season at Kansas . ... Former University of Florida forward Keith Stone is transferri­ng to Miami for his senior season . ... Michigan said guard Jordan Poole is staying in the NBA draft.

The Phoenix Suns fired coach Igor Kokoskov, ending the tenure of the NBA’s first Europeanbo­rn coach after one disappoint­ing season, continuing the Suns’ mediocrity . ... A person familiar with the team’s plans said the Cleveland Cavaliers intend to interview Portland Trail Blazers assistants Nate Tibbetts and David Vanterpool for their coaching job.

The 2020 U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials, which will determine the U.S. gymnastics teams for the Tokyo Summer Games, will be held June 25-28, 2020, at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis. In a change from four years ago, both the men’s and women’s trials will be held in the same spot. — Helene Elliott

The Kings signed defenseman Mikey Anderson to a three-year entry-level contract. Anderson helped Minnesota-Duluth win its second NCAA championsh­ip this month. He was a fourth-round draft pick in 2017. — Curtis Zupke

An Associated Press/Canadian Press survey of NHLPA representa­tives from all 31 teams found that 97% of those polled enjoy the league’s three-on-three overtime format during the regular season. The survey also found the players are less thrilled with delay-of-game penalties and confusion about goalie interferen­ce. ... Buffalo Sabres defenseman Zach Bogosian will miss five to six months after his second hip operation in a little more than a year.

Former champion Kei Nishikori advanced to the third round of the Barcelona Open while third-ranked Alexander Zverev was ousted. Zverev wasted a match point in his three-set loss to lucky loser Nicolas Jarry, a 23-year-old Chilean ranked 81st in the world . ... Twotime Grand Slam runner-up Kevin Anderson is skipping the claycourt swing this season because of a lingering right elbow injury.
