’ 80s Lakers are headed to HBO

-

Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul- Jabbar and Pat Riley are headed to HBO. The premium network has ordered a pilot for a scripted drama based on Jeff Pearlman’s nonfiction book “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s.”

The 2014 book recounts in detail all of the drama and action on and off the court. It chronicles “one of the most successful yet dysfunctional franchises in the history of sports,” Times columnist Chris Erskine wrote.

HBO described it as “a fast- break series chronicling the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers, one of sports’ most revered and dominant dynasties.”

Adam McKay will direct the pilot and executive produce. Max Borenstein will write the script, and Jim Hecht will co- write the story. Production is scheduled to start this summer.
