THREE UP ▲ THREE DOWN ▼ WHAT’S TRENDING IN MLB

The ups

New York Yankees on the injured list include outfielders Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, infielders Miguel Andujar and Troy Tulowitzki, and pitchers Dellin Betances and Luis Severino. Despite the cavalcade of calamities, the team has avoided getting buried in the American League East, winning 10 of 12 to stay near the Tampa Bay Rays. Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins delivered an emphatic but subtle rejoinder to the Mets and pitcher Jacob Rhame after Rhame threw near Hoskins’ head Monday. Hoskins authored a perfect answer Tuesday: He walloped a homer off Rhame and took a leisurely, 34second trot around the bases. Chicago White Sox infielder Tim Anderson won’t stop flipping his bat — and he shouldn’t. Back from a suspension for an incident related to a bat flip the week before, Anderson chucked his lumber into the grass after launching a walkoff homer Friday.

The downs

The $7-million investment

the Washington Nationals made in reliever Trevor Rosenthal looks disastrous. The team placed Rosenthal on the injured list last week because of a viral infection, which was revealed shortly after Rosenthal threw three wild pitches during a miserable outing at Coors Field, which pushed his ERA to 36.00 in seven outings. An impressive 12-6 start

by the Pittsburgh Pirates evaporated after the team dropped seven in a row, including a loss to the Dodgers on Saturday night. Pittsburgh was swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks, who have been relatively feisty, even after trading star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt last winter. Congratulations to the San Francisco Giants

for scoring a run in the first inning Friday. This does not sound like a significant achievement. But for the Giants, it was. The run snapped a 25-game streak to start the season without scoring a run in the first inning, a National League record.
