The Hall of Fame induction ceremony is next weekend, with six players — Harold Baines, Roy Halladay, Edgar Martinez, Mike Mussina, Mariano Rivera and Lee Smith — being honored. So let’s turn our attention this week and next to those not in the Hall. Which players not yet eligible have the best chance of making it? We will use the Hall of Fame Monitor, invented by sabermetrics godfather Bill James, to take a look. The Hall of Fame monitor assigns points for various career stats and accomplishments. A player scoring over 130 points is nearly a lock. From 100129 is a probable Hall of Famer, 8099 is close, and under 80 needs work. Of course, players linked to the use of performance-enhancing drugs — such as Alex Rodriguez — might not make the Hall of Fame regardless of their monitor score.
