Hall of Fame pitcher Gibson is battling pancreatic cancer

The longtime agent for Bob Gibson told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the Hall of Fame pitcher is battling pancreatic cancer.

Dick Zitzmann said that Gibson, 83, has been hospitaliz­ed for the last two weeks in Omaha and that chemothera­py is likely to begin Monday.

Gibson pitched 17 seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1968, he set a major league record with a 1.12 ERA and had a 22-9 record. He threw 13 shutouts and gave up only two runs in a 95-inning stretch.

Kurt Busch earned his first NASCAR victory this season by outracing younger brother Kyle in overtime in a door-to-door to the finish line at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta. The brothers touched as they raced for the lead, both cars wiggled, and it appeared Kurt was headed into the wall. But he recovered to squeeze past his brother.

An 18-year-old Kansas man was charged in the attack that wounded New York Giants draft pick Corey Ballentine and killed Dwane Simmons, one of Ballentine’s Washburn University teammates.

Francisco Alejandro Mendez was charged Friday with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and five counts of aggravated battery in the April 28 attack, the Shawnee County district attorney’s office said in a news release. Mendez is being held on a $1-million bond.

The two Washburn defensive backs were outside of an off-campus house party hours after the Giants selected Ballentine in the sixth round of the NFL draft when someone opened fire from a vehicle, killing Simmons and wounding Ballentine, who has since recovered.

Jim Caldwell, 64, is taking a leave of absence from the Miami Dolphins to address health issues he says “require my full attention.” Caldwell was hired in February to be the team’s assistant head coach and quarterbac­ks coach. Instead, he will spend this season as a consultant.

Rey Vargas grinded out a unanimous-decision victory over Tomoki Kameda in Carson to defend his WBC super-bantamweig­ht title.

Vargas (34-0, 22 KOs) made his fifth defense of his 122-pound belt in his usual workmanlik­e style, with the Mexican champion outboxing his Japanese opponent for long stretches .

All three judges scored the bout 117-110 to Vargas.

Shakur Stevenson won his homecoming fight in Newark, N.J., with a third-round knockout of Alberto Guevara, keeping the 2016 Olympic silver medalist undefeated and in line for a featherwei­ght title fight.
