Three up

Will Smith. The Dodgers’ rookie catcher set a franchise record with 19 RBIs in his first 14 games, breaking Cody Bellinger’s mark of 17 in 2017. Smith’s total is third all time behind Jim Greengrass (21 in 1952) and Austin Riley (20 in 2019). Zack Greinke. The 16-year veteran was traded from the middling Arizona Diamondbacks to the first-place Houston Astros, dramatically increasing his chances of pitching in a World Series for the first time. Greinke, who has two years left on a six-year, $206.5-million contract, shows no signs of slowing at age 35, posting a 10-4 record and 2.90 ERA this season. Bruce Bochy. The San Francisco Giants manager has a shot at going out with a bang because his front office held on to pitchers Madison Bumgarner and Will Smith at the trade deadline. Bochy will retire at the end of the season, concluding a 25-year career that likely will result in a Hall of Fame induction because of his three World Series titles, even though his lifetime winning percentage is a tick below .500.

Three down

Aaron Judge. The New York Yankees slugger was three for his last 29 heading into Saturday with no RBIs. Judge missed two months with an oblique strain and has yet to regain the form that produced 52 home runs in his breakout 2017 season. He batted .258 with four home runs in July. Jordan Yamamoto. The Miami Marlins rookie starter acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in the Christian Yelich trade was unbeatable in his first six starts, going 4-0 with a 1.59 ERA. But the Dodgers knocked him around July 21, and in his last three starts, he has given up 15 earned runs in 14 innings. Colorado Rockies. Losers of 20 of their last 27 games and in last place in the NL West, the Rockies made no moves at the trade deadline. They explored unloading Daniel Murphy and Ian Desmond but had no takers because both veteran hitters are under contract beyond this season, Desmond at a fairly big $15 million.
