Johnson misses NASCAR’s playoffs

An almost flawless run Sunday by Kevin Harvick in the Brickyard 400 ruined any chance Jimmie Johnson had of executing his win-to-get-in-the-NASCAR-playoffs strategy, and when Johnson hit the wall with 55 laps to go at Indianapol­is Motor Speedway, it was official: He would miss the playoffs for the first time since they began in 2004.

Harvick, the pole-sitter, led all but 42 laps and beat Joey Logano by 6.118 seconds to claim his second Brickyard victory. Clint Bowyer and Ryan Newman captured the final two spots in the 16-driver playoffs.

Charles Leclerc ended Ferrari’s nine-year wait for a victory at its home circuit as he held off a Mercedes duo to win the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Italy, for his second straight Formula One victory. The pole-sitter finished 0.8 seconds ahead of Valtteri Bottas and 35.1 ahead of series leader Lewis Hamilton.

Al Carmichael, the running back who scored the first touchdown in the old American Football League while playing for Denver in 1960, died at 90.

Nigeria and Iran are going to the Olympics in men’s basketball, and host nation China’s World Cup run came to an end. Nigeria clinched the berth that goes to the top African finisher by beating China 86-73. The win also means the hosts won’t earn the automatic berth for the top Asian finisher. That goes to Iran after it beat the Philippine­s 95-75. ... Jayson Tatum will not play Monday night when the U.S. closes out World Cup second-round play against Brazil.
