Giants are down to three finalists

-

The San Francisco Giants narrowed their search for a manager to three finalists, a person with direct knowledge of the process said under condition of anonymity because the candidates’ names haven’t been made public.

Former Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler, Houston Astros bench coach Joe Espada and Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro are the final three vying to replace Bruce Bochy, who retired after the season.

Golden State Warriors center Kevon Looney was examined by specialists and has gone through a variety of tests for a nerve condition that has kept him out the last six games.

The Warriors said that an update on Looney’s status would be provided in two weeks.

Looney sat out the preseason because of a strained right hamstring but started in the season opener against the Clippers. He exited in the second half as a precaution because of tightness in the hamstring.

Winnipeg Jets forward Bryan Little remained hospitalized a day after being struck by a puck near the left ear.

Little was skating behind the net midway through the third period in the Jets’ 2-1 home loss to New Jersey when teammate Nikolaj Ehlers fired a rising slap shot from the point.

The puck hit Little on his left side and he fell to the ice, putting his head in his hands as blood dripped.

The Jets said Little needed about 30 stitches to close a cut but was in good spirits.

Ernie Els filled out an International team loaded with newcomers by choosing two more Presidents Cup rookies with his captain’s picks Wednesday night.

Among his picks were Jason Day of Australia, who will be playing for the fifth time, and Adam Hadwin of Canada, who made his debut in 2017.

Els also selected Joaquin Niemann of Chile and Sungjae Im of South Korea. That makes six players on the International

team who will be playing the Presidents Cup for the first time.

U.S. captain Tiger Woods is announcing his wild-card selections Thursday, and could use one of them on himself. There has not been a playing-captain in the Presidents Cup since Hale Irwin in the inaugural event, in 1994.

The Presidents Cup is Dec. 12-15 at Royal Melbourne in Australia, where the International team recorded its only victory, in 1998.

The American won at Royal Melbourne in 2011.

The Connecticut women’s basketball team announced it will host an exhibition game Jan. 27 against the U.S. women’s national team, which is playing college teams ahead of next year’s Olympics in Tokyo.
