It’s time to git along, little dogies
Roundups are the stuff of westerns, but these are real. Here are five places to watch or participate when it comes time to round ’em up.
Maybell, Colo.
Sombrero Ranches’ Great American Horse Drive in northwestern Colorado means you’ll see horses trotting through Maybell on Mother’s Day. The Maybell Heritage Days event also includes vendors and activities for families. The town is home to the Old Victory Hotel, dating to 1894, and more lodging is available in nearby Craig, Colo. Ketchum, Idaho
The Trailing of the Sheep Festival runs each fall in the Sun Valley area. It aims to celebrate the 150-plus-year tradition of moving sheep from summer mountain pastures to winter grazing. he five-day event culminates with the Big Sheep Parade down Main Street in Ketchum. Custer State Park, S.D.
Watch as cowpokes round up and drive a herd of 1,300 buffalo during the annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival. Spectators must stay in viewing areas until the herd is safely corralled. The buffalo are then sorted, branded and tested, and about 300 are selected for the fall auction. Dubois, Wyo.
If you’d rather participate, consider a driving vacation, as in cattle driving. Guests at the Bitterroot Ranch near Shoshone National Forest can help herd cattle into the mountains in July and drive them home again in September.
