Kings have a swift reply to Coyotes’ banner

- BY CHUCK SCHILKEN AND HOUSTON MITCHELL

Howler thought he got one over on the Kings.

The Arizona Coyotes’ mascot trolled the L.A. hockey team Monday night, unveiling during the teams’ game in Glendale a banner honoring Taylor Swift for most sold-out performances.

Only Swift didn’t set that record at Gila River Arena — she did it with 16 shows at Staples Center in 2015, prompting the facility to hang a banner commemorating the achievement from its rafters.

The Kings hate that banner and have been covering it up during home games this season.

But they can’t control what banners hang in visiting arenas. So Howler displayed what appeared to be an exact replica of the banner over the tunnel that led to the Kings’ locker room Monday night, according to the Athletic’s Craig Morgan.

Pretty good stuff from the Coyotes, whose best season was ended by the eventual Stanley Cup champion Kings in the 2012 Western Conference finals.

But L.A. got the last word.

“Congrats to the @ArizonaCoyotes on putting up their first-ever banner,” the two-time champion Kings tweeted.

This moment comes from

Peter Virgadamo:

“For the past 40 years I have been watching the USC-UCLA football game and as a USC alum, my most memorable moment came during their 1987 game.

“Held at the Coliseum on Nov. 21, my friends and I had great seats, about five rows up and close to the goal line.

“Near the end of the first half, we were cheering like crazy as Trojan quarterback Rodney Peete had the team on about the five-yard line and was driving for a touchdown. But Peete’s pass was intercepted at the goal line by Eric Turner, who ran at full speed for the Bruin goal line, a sure pick-six.

“To our horror, Turner raced down the sideline, right in front of us — with a clear field ahead of him, he was going for a sure touchdown. Then Peete took off after him and amazingly, tackled Turner before he could score, just as the half ended.

“I have never, before or since, seen a quarterback at any level run down a defensive back from behind.

“USC won that game 17-13, but if Peete hadn’t run down Turner and prevented a UCLA touchdown, USC could have lost that game.”
