Strong fired by South Florida
South Florida fired coach Charlie Strong on Sunday after three seasons when he won fewer games each year.
South Florida made the move two days after ending a 4-8 season with a blowout loss to rival Central Florida. Strong is 21-16 overall but 4-14 since starting last season with seven straight victories. The former Texas and Louisville coach went 10-2 in his first season after he replaced Willie Taggart.
Strong is 74-53 overall in 10 seasons as a head coach.
Luke, Addazio fired
Coaches Matt Luke of Mississippi and Steve Addazio of Boston College also are out of a job.
Luke’s third season without a winning record ended with an excruciating rivalry game loss to Mississippi State. Addazio’s Eagles went 6-6 to qualify for a bowl game for the sixth time in his seven seasons, but he never won more than seven games.
Schiano’s back
Greg Schiano is coming back to Rutgers, the school announced, a week after talks with the former Scarlet Knights coach fell apart.
Rutgers offered Schiano an eight-year deal worth $32 million, but the sides could not agree on other financial commitments. Rutgers officials finally got the deal done after a wave of criticism.
Schiano was coach at Rutgers from 2001 to 2011, and the Scarlet Knights went to a bowl game in six of his final seven seasons.
Rutgers went 2-10 this season, including 0-9 in the Big Ten. Chris Ash, who was fired five games into his fourth season, went 8-32.
