Syndergaar­d to undergo surgery

New York Mets righthande­r Noah Syndergaar­d became the latest pitcher to need Tommy John surgery, joining the New York Yankees’ Luis Severino and Boston’s Chris Sale.

New York said Syndergaar­d needs reconstruc­tion of his ulnar collateral ligament and will miss the season that’s been put on hold.

Dayton’s Obi Toppin and Anthony Grant are the AP men’s college basketball player of the year and coach of the year, respective­ly.

Lee Green, a defensive standout who played on two NCAA tournament teams for St. John’s, has died. He was 49. The school announced the death without identifyin­g a cause. The New York Post quoted former teammate and friend Lamont Middleton in reporting Green’s death was related to the coronaviru­s.

Playa del Rey St. Bernard High guard Reese DixonWater­s, a consensus topthree prospect in the state for the 2021 class, chose USC over Stanford, San Diego State and California.

The Arizona Cardinals made a $1-million donation to help the state’s coronaviru­s relief efforts, and Jacksonvil­le owner Shad Khan committed $1 million to northeast Florida’s response to the crisis . ... The Montreal Canadiens are temporaril­y laying off 60% of employees while the NHL season is suspended. The NHL, meanwhile, asked players and staff to extend their self-quarantine 10 more days to April 6 . ... NASCAR ordered staff pay cuts across its entire company until the series returns to racing, while the Philadelph­ia 76ers and New Jersey Devils rescinded pay cuts for employees one day after announcing them.
