People familiar with the discussion told the Associated Press that putting all 30 teams in the Phoenix area and playing in empty ballparks was among the ideas discussed by Major League Baseball and the players’ associatio­n during a telephone call to talk about paths forward for a season delayed by the pandemic. Ideas are still in the early stage.

IndyCar Series owner Roger Penske canceled a doublehead­er race at Detroit and adjusted the IndyCar schedule as the series remains on hold during the pandemic. To ensure a 15race schedule, IndyCar will now run doublehead­ers at Iowa Speedway, Laguna Speedway and return for a second race on the road course at Indianapol­is Motor Speedway in October.

The UFC said Tony Ferguson will fight Justin Gaethje for the interim lightweigh­t title in the main event of UFC 249 on April 18. Gaethje replaces lightweigh­t champion Khabib Nurmagomed­ov, who is unable to leave Russia during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NFL is delaying the start of its offseason workout program while formulatin­g a plan with the NFL Players Assn. on how to proceed during the pandemic . ... As reported earlier, the NFL draft will be conducted in a virtual format. In a memo sent to the 32 teams and obtained by the AP, Commission­er Roger Goodell outlined procedures for the April 23-25 draft. The guidelines include no group gatherings . ... San Francisco wide receiver Kendrick Bourne signed a one-year restricted free-agent tender.

The NBA told teams that they may not conduct or attend any workouts with draft-eligible players and are prohibited “from watching, requesting, or sharing any video of a draft-eligible player taking part in a workout” during the league’s hiatus. Also, Commission­er Adam Silver does not expect a decision to be made until at least May on the possible resumption of the season.
