-

A man douses a fire in a house damaged Tuesday during a battle between Indian forces and rebels in Srinagar, the main city in Indian-controlled Kashmir. The clash, the first in the city in two years, lasted about 12 hours and ended with the killing of Junaid Ashraf Sehrai, commander of the main rebel group, Hizbul Mujahideen, and his aide. Three Indian soldiers and a police official were injured in the fighting, which broke out after police and allied paramilitary soldiers cordoned off a neighborhood on a tip that militants were hiding there. More than a dozen houses were damaged or destroyed as explosions and gunshots rattled Srinagar. The violence sparked anti-India protests, prompting authorities to cut cellphone service.
