MLS cancels All-Star game in L.A.

- staff and wire reports

Major League Soccer announced Tuesday that its All-Star game at Banc of California Stadium has been canceled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The game, featuring allstar squads from MLS and Mexico’s Liga MX, was scheduled to take place July 29 at LAFC’s home stadium. Instead, the league hopes L.A. can host it next year.

MLS also announced the cancellation of the Leagues Cup, a tournament between top MLS and Liga MX clubs that was slated to take place between July and September, and the Campeones Cup, which would have featured the defending champions of the two leagues Aug. 12 in Seattle. The league expects both events to also return next year.

MLS, which suspended its season in March barely two weeks into it, has said it won’t return to action until June at the earliest.

MLS did allow training facilities to reopen this month for individual workouts and reportedly is considering a plan in which clubs would quarantine at a Disney resort in Orlando, Fla., and play without fans. — Jack Harris
