Threats over masks?

-

Re “Who will get blamed if virus soars?” June 10

The League of Women Voters of Orange County is beyond frustrated and disappointed with the Board of Supervisors for its refusal to support our now-departed chief health officer, Dr. Nichole Quick. Not only did the supervisors refuse to support her professional advice with respect to the wearing of masks, but they did little to discourage death threats that surely were central to her decision to resign.

Quick is a public health scientist who based her policy on data and facts, including the fact that the number of infections in Orange County has been going up. In fact, June 6 and 7 saw the two highest numbers of new cases in the county by a considerable margin.

The board also refused to endorse her recommendations for the wearing of masks when out in public, continually focusing on whether this protects the wearer. That is not the point. Masks should be worn to protect others (and, by extension, all of us), as it is possible to have and shed the virus before you have symptoms.

It is shameful that the Board of Supervisors continues to disparage the recommendations of healthcare professionals during the worst pandemic in more than 100 years.

Your article grossly and weirdly leaves out any mention of all the protests that just happened. It mentions sports events, parties, religious services and anything with more than 50 people, but not the protests.

How can you be so grossly hypocritical and incomplete?

I blame our president, who badly mishandled this country’s response in early 2020. Consequently, the states had to make their own decisions.

Trump, more concerned about his reelection and his image, still refuses to be seen wearing a mask, which emboldens his followers to act similarly. The result is millions of people not protecting themselves and each other precisely when there is much more interaction due to the economy restarting.

Yes, I blame Trump for not being the leader our country needs.

Why did you fail to mention that the people in Orange County protesting Dr. Quick were nudists?

Obviously, if these anti-fascists were so worked up about the suggestion that they wear masks, they surely must be outraged at the government overreach making it illegal not to wear clothes while out and about.
