Surging Darvish wins 5th straight

Yu Darvish struck out 10 in his career-high fifth consecutiv­e victory and the Chicago Cubs beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1 on Sunday to stop their crosstown rival’s seven-game win streak.

Darvish gave up one run and six hits in seven innings. The Japanese right-hander is 5-0 since he struggled in his first start of the year against Milwaukee on July 25.

“Seeing what he did out there was spectacula­r,” teammate Kyle Schwarber said.

Schwarber hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning as the Cubs won for just the fourth time in their last 11 games.

Jose Abreu went deep for the White Sox in the second, matching a major league record with a home run in four consecutiv­e at-bats. Abreu connected five times in the first two games against the Cubs, including three homers and four RBIs in Saturday night’s 7-4 win.

at Nationals 9, Marlins 3: Anibal Sanchez pitched seven effective innings and Trea Turner drove in three runs for Washington.

at Orioles 5, Red Sox 4: Rio Ruiz drove in four runs and Thomas Eshelman provided exceptiona­l relief for injured starter Wade LeBlanc. Anthony Santander stretched his hitting streak to 18 games.

at Rays 5, Blue Jays 4: Josh Fleming yielded two runs in five innings to win his major league debut, and John Curtiss worked 12⁄3 perfect innings to get his first career save.

Tigers 7, at Indians 4: Tarik Skubal and Daniel Norris combined to pitch six innings of one-run ball, Miguel Cabrera drove in two and Detroit hit three homers.

at Pirates 5, Brewers 4: Gregory Polanco’s two-run home run in the eighth inning lifted Pittsburgh to a three-game series sweep. The start of the game was delayed for nearly 90 minutes by rain.

Twins 5, at Royals 4: Nelson Cruz connected on Trevor Rosenthal’s 99-mph fastball for a solo home run that went an estimated 441 feet to center field in the ninth to give Minnesota a two-run lead and help the Twins win their eighth series in nine tries this season.

at Cardinals 6, Reds 2: Yadier Molina had four hits and top prospect Dylan Carlson hit his first career homer, helping St. Louis win three of four in the series.

at Mariners 4, Rangers 1: Sam Haggerty and Kyle Lewis homered and Justin Dunn pitched one-hit ball over six innings as Seattle sent Texas to its eighth straight loss, the longest streak in the majors this year.

at Padres 5 Astros 3: Fernando Tatis Jr. made two spectacula­r plays at shortstop, Manny Machado hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning and San Diego got a lockdown performanc­e from its bullpen for its seventh straight win.

at Giants 6, Diamondbac­ks 1: Mike Yastrzemsk­i celebrated his 30th birthday with a go-ahead home run, helping San Francisco to its sixth consecutiv­e victory.

Phillies 5, at Braves 4: Rhys Hoskins, Didi Gregorius and Alec Bohm homered and Philadelph­ia’s bullpen turned in a rare sparkling performanc­e to end a five-game skid.
