Cubs get 11,000th victory

Javier Baez hit two home runs, and the National League Central-leading Chicago Cubs beat the host Detroit Tigers 9-3 on Monday night to become the second franchise in major league history to post 11,000 wins.

Only the Giants have won more, with 11,179 victories after starting in New York in 1883 and later moving to San Francisco. The Cubs, who earned their first victory in 1876, improved to 11,00010,414. The Dodgers, who played in Brooklyn before moving to L.A., rank next with 10,996 wins.

at Brewers 4, Reds 2: Justin Smoak homered and drove in three as Milwaukee cooled off Trevor Bauer and ended a four-game skid by beating Cincinnati. Bauer, who fell to 3-1, began the game with an ERA of 0.68. The ex-UCLA standout gave up four runs in 61⁄3 innings and saw his ERA go to 1.65.

Twins 3, at Indians 2: Miguel Sano hit a two-run homer and ex-Dodger Kenta Maeda moved to 4-0 as Minnesota won. Cleveland manager Terry Francona will miss the series while he continues to deal with a gastrointe­stinal condition.

at Rangers 3, Athletics 2: Isiah-Kiner Falefa hit a goahead homer, and Texas ended its eight-game skid.

Rockies 3, at Diamondbac­ks 2: Raimel Tapia had three hits, including a goahead RBI single in the fifth inning, and Colorado ended a seven-game losing streak.

Marlins 11, at Nationals 8: Jesus Aguilar drove in three runs, and Miami beat Washington to take three of five in the series.

Blue Jays 6, at Rays 4: Randal Grichuk hit a threerun homer in the seventh inning, and Toronto prevailed.

at Cardinals 9, Royals 3: Paul DeJong drove in three runs to lead St. Louis.

Mets to resume play

The Mets will resume play Tuesday after no additional team members tested positive for COVID-19 since New York learned of two infections that caused four games to be postponed last week. A doublehead­er against Miami is set for Tuesday in New York.
