Marlins win, return to the postseason
The Miami Marlins clinched an improbable playoff berth in their coronavirus- decimated season, beating the New York Yankees 4- 3 in 10 innings Friday to seal a postseason trip on the f ield of the team that Miami Chief Executive Derek Jeter and manager Don Mattingly once captained.
Miami earned its f irst postseason trip since 2003 when it won the World Series as the Florida Marlins.
The Marlins had the worst record in the NL last year at 57- 105.
at Braves 8, Red Sox 7 ( 11 innings): Freddie Freeman hit a tworun homer to lead off the 11th and Atlanta clinched the No 2 seed in the NL playoffs.
Cubs 10, at White Sox 0: Yu Darvish pitched seven strong innings for his NL- leading eighth win, Willson Contreras homered twice and the Cubs moved to the brink of sealing the NL Central.
at Rays 6, Phillies 4: Joey Wendle had a go- ahead two- run single in the eighth and AL East champion Tampa Bay rallied to hurt Philadelphia’s playoff hopes.
at Blue Jays 10, Orioles 5: In Buffalo, N. Y., Randal Grichuk and Travis Shaw homered, Nate Pearson returned from an elbow injury to pitch 12⁄ scoreless innings and 3 playoff- bound Toronto beat Baltimore.
at Royals 3, Tigers 2: Brad Keller threw six scoreless innings and Adalberto Mondesi had three hits to lead Kansas City.
at Rangers 5, Astros 4 ( 10 innings):
Joey Gallo drove home the winning run on a f ielder’s- choice grounder in the 10th inning.
Reds 7, at Twins 2: Mike Moustakas homered twice and drove in three runs to help Cincinnati clinch its first playoff spot since 2013.
at Indians 4, Pirates 3: Cesar Hernandez ripped an RBI double into the right- field corner with two outs in the ninth as Cleveland rallied for its third walk- off win in four days.
at Giants 5- 5, Padres 4- 6: Trent Grisham’s three- run homer with one out in the seventh inning help San Diego earn a split of a doubleheader after ace Dinelson Lamet left the game with an apparent injury. Wilmer Flores hit a go- ahead homer in the fourth as San Francisco won the opener.
at Diamondbacks 4- 11, Rockies 0- 5:
Josh VanMeter hit a three- run homer, David Peralta and Tim Locastro both had three hits and Arizona swept the doubleheader. Zac Gallen had a career- high 10 strikeouts over six scoreless innings and Christian Walker hit a two- run homer in the opener.
Brewers 3- 1, at Cardinals 0- 9: Daniel Ponce de Leon pitched onehit ball over six innings and St. Louis beat Milwaukee to split their doubleheader. In the opener, Christian Yelich homered to lead the Brewers.
at Athletics 3, Mariners 1: Mark Canha belted a two- run home run in the 10th inning to beat Seattle.
