KILLING SPARKS PROTESTS

-

Jonata Anjo lies on a checkout counter Friday at a Carrefour supermarket during a protest against the killing of Joao Alberto Silveira Freitas at a different Carrefour the night before. Freitas, who was Black, died after being beaten by security guards outside the market in Porto Alegre, sparking outrage after videos of the incident circulated on social media. One clip showed a guard restraining Freitas while another pummeled him with repeated blows to the face. Other clips, shot afterward, showed a guard kneeling atop Freitas’ back. Protests erupted in many cities Friday, which was Black Consciousness Day in Brazil.
