» “‘First Cow’ is dedicated to Peter Hutton. He filmed a lot of landscapes and on ships and is well known in the avant-garde filmmaking world. He was a huge influence on me, getting to teach with him and talk to him about films. He was a voice in my filmmaking other than what I’d get from friends who work in a more narrative realm. The opening shot of the cow on the barge is an hommage to Peter.”

» “Todd Haynes is a close friend who introduced me to [‘First Cow’ coscreenwriter] Jon Raymond. I teach with his films a lot, and in teaching them I keep discovering more things in his stuff. He’s an example of a filmmaker whose films are the strongest when he writes the scripts, because he’s an amazing writer.”
