6 QUESTIONS TO ASK A PAINTING CONTRACTOR

-

Who will you hire to paint your home? You may have multiple contractors to choose from, which makes the decision harder. To find the most qualified, reliable pro, ask the following questions:

1. What kind of insurance do you have?

If the painting contractor doesn’t have workman’s compensation and liability insurance, the homeowner will be held responsible if someone is injured on the job. But don’t just take his word for it – ask to see the paperwork.

2. How long have you been in business?

A company in business for five or more years has put roots down in the community. Check their website to get a sense of their history and their work. If there’s no website, ask to see photos of recent jobs. Online reviews can be helpful as well.

3. Do you do a background check on your employees?

Since most people don’t empty their homes before the painters arrive, you must feel comfortable exposing your property to strangers. Ensure that companies hire reputable people they can vouch for.

4. Will you clean up the work areas at the end of the day?

A room that’s being painted can be an incredibly dangerous place for curious young children or pets. Toxic materials and heavy tools should be placed out of sight before workers leave for the day.

5. Will you give me a contract we’ll both sign?

Don’t hire anyone if they’re not offering a detailed contract. It should include everything that was discussed and agreed upon, including cost and payment schedules, when work will tentatively begin and end, and which professional-quality paint will be used.

6. Can you provide three references I can call?

Get the names of recent satisfied customers so you can ask about the contractor’s strengths and weaknesses. If the contractor balks at giving out names, they may have no good references to give.
