Three-time Indy 500 winner Unser, 87, dies

Bobby Unser, who began racing jalopies in New Mexico and went on to become a beloved three-time winner of the Indianapol­is 500 and part of the only pair of brothers to capture “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” has died. He was 87.

He died Sunday at his home in Albuquerqu­e, N.M., of natural causes, Indianapol­is Motor Speedway said Monday.

Unser was a member of one of America’s most famed racing families and one of the greatest drivers in the history of the speedway, capturing the race in 1968, 1975 and 1981.

Amazon package will start early

Amazon Prime Video will become the exclusive home of the NFL’s “Thursday Night Football” package a year earlier than originally anticipate­d.

Amazon and the league announced Prime Video will take over the entire package in 2022, which will make it an 11-season deal through 2032.

This is the first time a streaming service has had the full rights to an NFL package.

The WNBA signed a multiyear deal with Google to be the presenting partner for the league’s playoffs while also announcing that 25 games will be nationally broadcast on ABC and ESPN in celebratio­n of the league’s 25th season.

USC (19-1) received the top seed for the NCAA women’s water polo championsh­ip, which will be played at UCLA on May 12-16. The Trojans will take on Marist or Salem in a quarterfin­al game May 14. The host Bruins (13-4) are seeded third and open against Hawaii that same day. Cal Lutheran (7-0) has an opening-round date with Fresno State (12-5) on May 12.

A federal judge ordered Puerto Rican boxer Felix Verdejo held without bail after he was charged in the death of his 27-year-old pregnant lover whose body was found in a lagoon. Verdejo is charged with kidnapping and carjacking resulting in the death of Keishla Rodriguez and with intentiona­lly killing an unborn child.

The English Football Assn. opened an inquiry into the Super League rebellion and sought evidence from the six English clubs involved in the breakaway . ... A medical report on the death of Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona given to prosecutor­s said he agonized for more than 12 hours, did not receive adequate treatment and could still be alive if he had been properly hospitaliz­ed. Maradona, 60, died of a heart attack at a rented residence outside Buenos Aires following a Nov. 3 brain operation . ... Malcolm Epps , a 6foot-6, 253-pound tight end, became the latest in a line of recent Texas transfers to commit to USC. Munir McClain, the USC receiver suspended last fall amid a federal inquiry into apparent unemployme­nt fraud on campus, has reentered the NCAA transfer portal, six months after opting to withdraw his name the first time.
