N.Y. Jets assistant Knapp dies

New York Jets assistant coach Greg Knapp died of injuries suffered in a bicycle accident near his home in San Ramon, Calif., on Saturday. He was 58.

Knapp, well-liked and respected in NFL circles as one of the league’s top offensivem­inded coaches, was hired by the Jets in January as part of new coach Robert Saleh’s staff, serving as the passing game specialist.

The New Orleans Pelicans hired Phoenix Suns assistant and former NBA player Willie Green as their new head coach . ... Hall of Fame center Bill Russell announced he is auctioning off hundreds of items from his personal collection, including trophies, rings, basketball­s and jerseys spanning his 13-year career as a player and coach for the Boston Celtics.

The Lakersexte­nded a qualifying offer to Talen Horton-Tucker, making the second-year guard a restricted free agent this offseason.

Had the team not extended the offer, HortonTuck­er would have become an unrestrict­ed free agent. The Lakers can now match any offer he receives during free agency.

USC quarterbac­k Kedon Slovis signed a deal with Klutch Sports to represent him on all name, image and likeness matters, a person familiar with the deal but not authorized to speak on the matter told The Times.

Slovis appears to be the first college football star to sign with the agency, which represents LeBron James, Anthony Davis and other major NBA stars.

Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said captain Shea Weber will not play next season because of various injuries, including to his foot, ankle and knee, and that the defenseman’s career may be over. The 35-year-old was a stalwart on Montreal’s blue line last season, guiding the Canadiens to the Stanley Cup Final.

The Kings and Ducks will open the 2021-22 season with home games on Oct. 14. The Kings will host the Vegas Golden Knights and the Ducks will play the Winnipeg Jets. All teams will return to an 82-game schedule after this past season was limited to 56 games because of the pandemic.

The Kings and Ducks will return to the traditiona­l Pacific Division. The league will pause from Feb. 7-22 to allow players to participat­e in the Beijing Olympics, if an agreement is reached between

the league and the NHL Players’ Assn. If there is no agreement, the NHL schedule will be revised.

The Carolina Hurricanes dealt rookie goalie Alex Nedeljkovi­c to the Detroit Red Wings for the No. 94 pick in the draft this weekend and the rights to pending free-agent goalie Jonathan Bernier. Detroit signed Nedeljkovi­c to a $6-million, two-year contract . ... The Philadelph­ia Flyers shipped onetime cornerston­e defenseman Shayne Gostisbehe­re to the Arizona Coyotes for secondand seventh-round draft picks in 2022 in a salary-cap relief move . ... The Seattle Kraken made their first post expansion draft trade, sending winger Tyler Pitlick to Calgary for a 2022 fourthroun­d selection . ... Chicago Blackhawks executive Stan Bowman pledged to cooperate with an investigat­ion into allegation­s that an assistant coach sexually assaulted two players in 2010.

The U.S. will play a World Cup qualifier in Texas for the first time, hosting Jamaica on Oct. 7 at Q2 Stadium in Austin.
