Women want suit reinstated

Players on the U.S. women’s national soccer team urged a federal appeals court to reinstate their equal pay lawsuit, saying their greater success than the American men was not taken into account by a trial court judge who dismissed their case.

Players led by Alex Morgan sued the U.S. Soccer Federation in March 2019, contending they have not been paid equitably under their collective bargaining agreement that runs through December 2021.

Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania reached her second straight WTA semifinals as a qualifier at the Palermo (Italy) Ladies Open. She beat Lucia Bronzetti of Italy 6-4, 7-5 and next faces sixth-seeded Oceane Dodin of France. Dodin doublefaul­ted 16 times and still overcame Jaqueline Cristian of Romania 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-4. Fourth-seeded Zhang Shuai advanced and will face top-seeded Danielle Collins of the U.S. after she beat seventh-seeded Astra Sharma of Australia 6-1, 6-4.

The two-year probation imposed on Connecticu­t men’s basketball for NCAA violations under former coach Kevin Ollie is over. The governing body informed the school it has met all NCAA regulation­s, the university said.

The number of NFL players in the COVID-19 vaccinatio­n process reached 80%, with nine teams having 90% or more of their players in that category. Katie Gomez of Lake Balboa Birmingham High won the U16 Cadet freestyle wrestling world championsh­ip at 53 kilos (116.8 pounds) by defeating her Russian opponent 10-0 on Friday in Budapest, Hungary. Gomez, 17, who is a twotime City Section champion, earlier scored victories over opponents from Hungary, India and Turkey.

The Cleveland Cavaliers extended a qualifying offer to center Jarrett Allen, making him a restricted free agent.
